What’s the Big Deal about Sundance?

Recently the Hollywood Reporter wrote an article about independent films taking a more direct route to studios than taking the chance of audience lukewarm approval at Sundance. Independent filmmakers often lament that their chances of getting into Sundance without a “name” attached to their film is slim and none. Is Sundance really about independent film? What does a film “get” out of going to Sundance or any other film festival for that matter?
